We have the following items for your attention:
1. Prof Sankoh attends meeting on Data Revolution in Africa
The Executive Director of the INDEPTH Network, Prof Osman Sankoh, is attending a High Level Conference (HLC) on data revolution from 27 to 29 March 2015 as a side event of the 8th Joint ECA-AUC Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development taking place in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia.
It is dubbed “Setting the scene for a sustainable development agenda powered by Data Revolution in Africa”.
The output of the HLC will be an 'African Data Consensus' on the key principles of a new data ecosystem for the post 2015 sustainable development goals, including a roadmap for implementing the data revolution in Africa.
The meeting will discuss data revolution in Africa and its implications for the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the post-2015 Development Agenda. Read more.
2. Ifakara Centre leader wins top award
The Executive Director of the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania Prof Salim Abdulla (picture right) has been awarded the Donald Reid Medal at aceremony inm London earlier this month. The Medal is awarded triennially by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in recognition of distinguished contributions to epidemiology. The medal was instituted in 1979 in memory of Professor Donald Reid who was Director of the Department of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from 1961 until his sudden death in 1977.
3. INDEPTH Education Workshop held in Accra
Members of the INDEPTH Education Working Group have met in Accra for a three- day workshop which was officially opened by the Executive Director of the Network, Prof. Osman Sankoh on Wednesday.
The 13 participants were from nine HDSS in Burkina Faso, Gambia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and included a delegate from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Vienna, Austria.
In his opening remarks Prof Sankoh stressed the importance of collaboration among researchers saying that by cooperating they make faster progress than working individually.
He also gave background of the Education Working Group, adding that for many years INDEPTH had focused on demographic andhealth research projects that covered pregnancies and births but not what happened to the child after it was born. Read more
4. Scientific conference registration opens
Registration for this year’s INDEPTH Scientific Conference (ISC 2015) is now open. The conference will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from November 11 – 14, 2015. It is on the theme “Health and Demographic Research to Inform the Post-2015 Development Agenda”.
