Friday Newsletter from the Secretariat
10th July 2015

Dear Centre Leaders,
Greetings from the INDEPTH Secretariat. We hope you have had a good week.

We have the following items for your attention:

1. World Population Day

The international community will observe World Population Day tomorrow, July 11 – a day set aside to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. The theme of this year's World Population Day is Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies. As a Network that tracks the health and demographic data of millions of people in Africa, Asia and Oceania, we join the rest of the world in celebrating this day and pledge our commitment in producing reliable longitudinal data about the lives of people in low- and middle- income countries and its impact.

A recent United Nations report warns that the number of forcibly displaced people has risen to a record number – almost 60 million at the end of 2014. Among these, most women and adolescent girls face particular threats as a result of the absence of health and other essential services that they need. Message from the Executive Director of UNFPA Dr Babatunde Osotimehin on the World Population Day is available here

2. John C Caldwell Endowment for Population, Health and Development Visiting Fellowship for African Researcher

This is an exciting opportunity for an African population health researcher to develop a collegial partnership with researchers at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH) and the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute (ADSRI) at The Australian National University (ANU).

In 2015-6, this programme will support one African researcher (at any career stage) to undertake research for up to three months at the ANU. The Fellowship will fund travel, accommodation and living allowance. The researcher must be affiliated with an African research institute or university and have a PhD or equivalent. A primary goal of this programme is to establish ongoing collaboration following the visit.
