Dear Centre Leaders,
Greetings from the INDEPTH Secretariat. We hope you have had a good week.
We have the following items for your attention:
1. Music concert marks end of Nouna scientific meeting
The 3rd Scientific Days of Nouna Health Research Centre (CRSN) ended on a high note on Saturday with a social event at the town centre with hundreds of Nouna residents and conference participants attending.
The concert featured prominent artists in Burkina Faso: Awa Sissao, Solo Dja, Some Kabako, Sali Star Nouna and Jean Robert Dédougou.
Nouna Health Research Centre is one of five INDEPTH member centres in Burkina Faso. CRSN Communication Officer Seydou Compaore said the centre organises such events to increase public awareness on their research work and to reach people with important messages. He said the event entertains people and promotes the work of Burkinabe artists to local and foreign audiences, the later through the participants of the meeting who came from abroad.
For three days, the Nouna Health Research Centre hosted scientists from the country and abroad in one of the largest gathering of researchers in Burkina Faso.
The meeting held on 30 July -1 August 2015 was opened by the Burkinabe Minister of Health, Dr Amede Prosper Guiguemde, who was also accompanied by his Research and Innovation counterpart, Prof Jean Noel Poda.
The two ministers took part in a panel discussion on the disconnection between researchers and policymakers, and mentioned some challenges that made it difficult for the government to use research evidence in making decisions.
Dr Amede Prosper Guiguemde advised research centres to find more practical and simpler ways of communicating research results, “and not expect that policymakers will use findings as published in scientific papers.”
The minister said policymakers were under pressure from their constituents to make decisions. Unfortunately, he said, researchers need a lot of time to provide solutions to the questions that policymakers want answered quickly and as a result decisions were made without research evidence.
However, some researchers in the meeting challenged policymakers for not being clear on country priorities which researchers could focus on.
Another panelist who represented the ordinary people said communities around research institutions were getting tired of being research participants.
He said scientists take samples from people, they also fill in so many questionnaires but they (scientists) do not come back to tell them (the people) the end results.
The theme of the three-day meeting was “Research for health: Strategies for better implication of policy makers in the financing of research and utilisation of research results.”
Issues covered during the meeting include: Strategies for better appropriation and utilisation of research results towards improving community health care provision; health research financing for equitable health care access in Africa and research for development.
