1. INDEPTH ED in Germany for two important meetings
Prof. Sankoh (right-2nd row); Dr. Mamusu Kamanda (right-1st row) in Potsdam.
The Executive Director of the INDEPTH Network, Prof Osman Sankoh, this week participated in two important activities in Germany. The first one was the NUTRI-SCOPE proposal development meeting at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. 

He later proceeded to the Institute for Clinical Biometry and Epidemiology at University Hospital in Hamburg. The meetings took place from 30 May to 2 June, 2016.

2.  DEMOSTAF holds inception meeting and scientific seminar

The Demography Statistics for Africa (DEMOSTAF) project inception meeting and the scientific seminar has been held at the Institut national d'études démographiques (INED) in Paris, France.

The scientific workshop was the theme “The challenges of demographic data in Sub-Saharan Africa in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

3. Forum discusses new safety data from pregnancy studies

The Harmonised Safety Monitoring of Immunisation Pregnancy International Consensus Conference was held from 29 – 30 March 2016 in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.  The forum discussed new safety data from immunisation in pregnancy studies and also identified converging stakeholder needs and requirements for high quality data. Read more
4. MRC/DFID African Research Leader scheme 2016/17
The UK Medical Research Council and the UK Department for International Development announce a further call for proposals for the prestigious African Research Leader awards.

This MRC/ DFID jointly funded scheme aims to strengthen research leadership across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) by attracting and retaining exceptionally talented individuals who will lead high quality programmes of research on key global health issues pertinent to SSA.  The African Research Leader (ARL) should be supported by an enthusiastic local research environment and by a strong linkage with a UK partner. Read more

 
5.  Regional Health Data Mapping Workshop
The USAID-funded The Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) Program is searching for potential participants for a Regional Health Data Mapping Workshop. The workshop will be held from August 8-12, 2016, in Accra, Ghana.
The workshop will focus on the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) in public health, specifically using maps for better program and policy decision making.

6.  African Union Commission (AUC) launches African Union Research Grants 2016/ Opens Call for Proposals on Food & Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture
The African Union Research Grants (AURG) programme supports research and innovation in Africa and is supported by the European Union through the Pan African programme (2014-2020) with a budget of €17.5 million for two calls in 2016 and 2017.

The AURG programme supports the Africa's Science Technology and Innovation Strategy-2024 which addresses the aspirations identified under Agenda 2063, as well as the Africa-EU Partnership priority on Human Development (http://www.africa-eu-partnership.org/en/priority-areas/human-development).

The closing date for applications is 17 August 2016 at 5pm Addis Ababa time (Applications must be submitted in both paper and electronic version – see official documents for details).

6. NIDS Panel Data Course 
This five-day training course from July 11 – 15, is designed for people who are interested in using the National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) panel data but have not yet done so. Participants should have honours-level Econometrics, and prior experience using STATA to analyse cross-sectional household survey data. However, experience working with panel data is not necessary. The deadline for applications is 17 June 2016. We will let applicants know if they have been accepted by 22 June 2016. Read more

1.  Vacancy: Senior Data Manager/Deputy Program Manager
The Senior Data Manager will lead the data team in HDSS program (Kombewa – Kisumu) and will work under the supervision of the section head. He/she will manage and maintain a longitudinal database for the program, ensure consistency and integrity of data, oversee data collection, interpret data including statistical values, and provide data support to nested studies. Deadline 8 June 2016.

2. Delivery hut services of Ballabgarh HDSS
A paper titled “Profile of pregnant women using delivery hut services of the Ballabgarh Health and Demographic Surveillance System in rural north India” has been published in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
The paper noted that belonging to a disadvantaged social group (in terms of caste or education) was not an obstacle to use of delivery hut services. The delivery huts might have satisfied some unmet needs of community members in rural India. Read more
