1) AWI-Gen Phase 2 research team meets in Accra

Between 22nd and 23rd February, the AWI-Gen Phase 2 research team met in Accra.  The two-day meeting in Accra aimed to review data collection instruments from AWI-Gen Phase 1; discuss project logistics and community engagement for Phase 2; and map a way forward, discussing timelines and role allocation, for Phase 2. 2) Targeted testing shows a high burden of STIs in young people in rural South Africa

New research published in PLOS Medicine shows a high burden of sexually transmitted infections and bacterial vaginosis among young people in rural South Africa.

The study, led by researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the Africa Research Health Institute, found that young women were more than twice as likely to be infected with chlamydia (5% in men and 11% in women), and nearly twice as likely to be infected with genital herpes (17% in men and 29% in women). 3) Kintampo Health Research Centre hosts Principal Investigator of ABACUS study

The Kintampo Health Research Centre(KHRC) was privileged to host Professor Heiman Wertheim for a two-day working visit from 1st to 2nd February 2018. As part of the visit Professor Wertheim toured the study area in a field trip. He also did a presentation to the KHRC Scientific staff with insights into Antibiotics Access, Use and Resistance which the ABACUS study seeks to address. Read more

Centre Leaders and teams, working groups and INDEPTH projects may now pre-register for INDEPTH’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Pretoria, South Africa. We have chosen a date that doesn’t conflict with the major other international conferences. So please block the dates, pre-register and let us know your specific needs for sessions and workshops.
