Friday Newsletter from the Secretariat
26 September 2014
Dear Centre Leaders,
Greetings from the INDEPTH Secretariat. We hope you have had a good week.

We have three items for your attention this week:

1. INDEPTH Administrators’ Skills Enhancement Workshop
This workshop will take place from November 26 - 28, 2014, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The meeting is to among others bring together INDEPTH Network Administrators to share experiences and discuss issues related to the provision of administrative activities to facilitate the work of HDSS sites in low- and middle- income countries.

Please see attached for details.

2. INDEPTH Small Grants Programme
Don’t miss this opportunity to apply for small grants from INDEPTH.

The overall goal of this INDEPTH Small Grants programme is to support research and research capacity strengthening among INDEPTH member centres in low- and middle-income countries.

We fund collaborative projects among three or more INDEPTH member centres.

Please see attached for details.

3. Meet our graduates from the INDEPTH-funded MSc Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa

Today, we present to you a note of appreciation from from Tieba Millogo of Kaya HDSS, Burkina Faso, who completed his course at the Wits University in July 2014.

This series of short profiles is to introduce the more than 30 HDSS scientists who have been funded by INDEPTH to pursue the MSc in Population-based Field Epidemiology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Scholarships for this programme have been graciously provided by Sida, Rockefeller Foundation and the Gates Foundation.

My programme went very well. I am really grateful to INDEPTH and its entire staff for providing scholarship and facilitation throughout this training.

The course fits well in my training needs and it has equipped me with the skills I needed to further my career of a medical researcher.

I have now every confidence in my ability to fully carry out epidemiologic studies into various local relevant fields. As a fellow from francophone Africa, I am really lucky to have benefited from this course. The exposure in my case was double: the proper scientific programme of the course and the language.

In addition to completing the scientific goals of the programme, I have improved my skills in English which is also invaluable for my career.

I would like to specially thank INDEPTH for also having facilitated my parallel language training at Wits Language School.

My field placement in Navrongo Health Research Centre, Ghana, was another great exposure from which I have learned a lot. I have come to realise that due to language barriers, researchers in the same region, working in the same area have limited south-south collaborations.

Thanks to INDEPTH, progress is being made to end such limitations and to allow a full expression of the collaboration potential between researchers. I am committed to help develop collaborations between my HDSS site and the other sites in West Africa and beyond.

Thank you.

Have a restful weekend!
