Friday Newsletter from the Secretariat
7th November 2014
Dear Centre Leaders,
Greetings from the INDEPTH Secretariat. We hope you have had a good week.

We have six items for your attention this week:

1. Volume 2 of Cause-Specific Mortality Supplement
This is a special invitation to all the 32 HDSSs to contribute to Volume 2 of the INDEPTH Cause-Specific Mortality Supplement. Please write to Osman (osman.sankoh@indepth-network) to indicate your interest between November 1 -30.

We have 22 HDSSs contributing to the now published Volume 1 of the INDEPTH Cause-Specific Mortality Supplement.

See our press release: http://indepth-network.org/indpeth_press_release.html

2. INDEPTH Sexual and Reproductive Health Working group
The Evidence Project, a USAID-funded cooperative agreement awarded to the Population Council and its partners including INDEPTH, seeks to expand access to high-quality family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH) programming worldwide. The project uses an implementation science (IS) approach to generate, synthesize and use evidence to improve programming and to reduce barriers to using FP. INDEPTH will play an important role in the strategic generation and utilization of longitudinal evidence related to family planning and reproductive health. See more in the attached document
.

Please write to Samuelina: samuelina.arthur@indepth-network.org
.

3. INDEPTH Education Working Group
INDEPTH has decided to re-launch the INDEPTH Education Working Group with Dr Mamusu Kamanda, our Postdoc, anchoring the activities from Accra.
Please contact mamusu.kamanda@indepth-network.org
Please see attached for details.

4. INDEPTH Still-birth and neonatal mortality analysis
The Maternal and Newborn Health Working Group is opening up a multi-centre paper on stillbirths and neonatal deaths to all INDEPTH member centres that have data from 2008 to 2012 (inclusive).

Please look at the tables and send your data to Osman (osman.sankoh@indepth-network.org). Peter Waiswa, leader of the Working Group, will facilitate.
Please see attached for details.

5. IMPACT CASE STUDIES
We have attached four powerful impact case studies from Agincourt (South Africa), Manhica (Mozambique), Nairobi (Kenya) and Dodowa (Ghana) on how their work have contributed to influencing policy and practice.

The idea: We want to compile an INDEPTH book on Impact Case Studies by our member centres in Africa, Asia and Oceania.

The challenge: The case study must be written by your centre within a specified period. The product MUST be thorough and have buy-in of the centre leader.
The attractions:
1) Templates/examples already exist. See attached.
2) 4-5 pages
3) Your case study will be published in the INDEPTH book – in print and electronic.
4) The world will read about the impact of your work.
5) The INDEPTH Research to Policy Working Group will work closely with the centre authors.
This is open to ALL 45 member centres of INDEPTH in 20 countries in Africa, Asia and Oceania.

To indicate your interest, please write to Becky: becky.kwei@indepth-network.org
.

6. INDEPTH Vaccinations & Child Survival Working Group leader turns 70; Congratulations!
The Executive Director and the entire Network congratulate Peter on his 70th birthday. He has effectively and committedly led the INDEPTH Vaccinations and Child Survival Working Group. The existing INDEPTH Prize for Extraordinary Research at INDEPTH had its birth through a $10,000 donation from Peter to INDEPTH.

Thank you.

Have a restful weekend!
Becky Kwei
