6. Meet our graduates from the INDEPTH-funded MSc Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa
Mr. Charfudin Sacoor of Manhica HDSS, Mozambique, is our personality for the short profiles this week. This series of short profiles is to introduce the more than 30 HDSS scientists who have been funded by INDEPTH to pursue the MSc in Population-based Field Epidemiology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Scholarships for this programme have been graciously provided by Sida, Rockefeller Foundation and the Gates Foundation.

More information on the INDEPTH Scientific Development and Leadership Programme can be obtained by clicking on the following link: Leadership Programme.

Full name: Charfudin Sacoor
Position before the programme:: Demographer at Manhica HDSS, Mozambique
Current position: : Head of Department of Demography
Student years at Wits University: 2008 - 2009
Host HDSS centre for the field attachment: Africa Centre, South Africa.

Mr. Charfudin Sacoor has been working with Manhiça Health Research Centre (Manhiça HDSS) since June 2004.

In 2008,theINDEPTH-Network sponsored him to do Master programme on Population-based Field Epidemiology at University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“This was a valuable opportunity to my career, especially because this Master programme is rich and covers the majority of needs for those who are members of INDEPTH-Network family. One other important thing about this programme is that, it gives you a possibility to know how to do things as a result of the good combination of theory and practical classes,” he said. “Personally I enjoyed my student life and the challenge to learn in an environment typically English as my native language is Portuguese. I’m also proud to have had the opportunity to spend six months in Africa Centre, KwaZulu-Natal during my field attachment and the privilege to work with other scientists there” he added.

Since 2010, Charfudin has led the Department of Demography at Manhiça Health Research Centre. He coordinates all the processes of data capturing, data entry, data cleaning and data analysis. He is also involved in some INDEPTH-Network working groups and some research project in Manhiça as co-investigator: These are:

(i) PREVENT Project: Programme Enhancing Vaccine Epidemiology Networks and Training,
(ii) TESFAM Project: HIV Counselling & Testing Services Using the Health Demographic Surveillance System and Pneumococcal Disease Surveillance at District Hospital, in Manhiça, Mozambique and
(iii) CLIP Project (Community Level Interventions for Pre-eclampsia), leading the Demographic component of this study.

Charfudin has also beencollaborating with Faculty of Medicine at University Eduardo Mondlane and Centro Regional de Desenvolvimento Sanitário de Maputo (training Institution of the Ministry of Health of Mozambique) as a lecturer of Demography since 2010.

Thank you.

Have a restful weekend!
