Highlights from INDEPTH AGM 2017 in Dubai

22 Dec 2017

The INDEPTH Annual General Meeting (AGM 2017) was held on 11-12 December 2017 co-hosted by the Harvard University Medical School, Dubai Campus at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Complex in Dubai, UAE. 50 self-funded representatives from 30 INDEPTH member centres attended the AGM. Chaired by Prof Tumani Corrah, Director of the Africa Research Excellence Fund, the INDEPTH Board held its 42nd meeting on December 10th before the AGM commenced the following day. The AGM was also chaired by Prof. Corrah.

The Executive Director, Prof Osman Sankoh, gave the State of the Network address which highlighted INDEPTH successes as well as challenges the Network is currently facing. His frank presentation first portrayed a vibrant Network with some multi-centre projects running until 2022. He was excited about INDEPTH celebrating 20th anniversary of its existence in 2018. That is indeed great achievement contributed to by many people and institutions included funders. Osman then stressed the need to put more efforts towards raising funds, especially for core institutional support, as times are changing for many research organisations globally. Prof Sankoh who was stepping down as Executive Director exactly 10 years since he was appointed in 2007, thanked the entire Network for the unflinching support he had received over the years.

Centre leaders then engaged in fruitful discussions on the future of INDEPTH. Among the key outcomes are decisions to restructure the INDEPTH Resource & Training Centre and relocate the centre to a host university / research institution in order to leverage the existing research capacity in such an institution.

In collaboration with the Harvard University Medical School Dubai Campus, INDEPTH held a successful half-day scientific discussion on NCD research in the UAE and in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Oceania. Distinguished colleagues from UAE universities and research institutions made presentations on exciting research. It is hoped that INDEPTH and UAE will continue the dialogue for future joint research.
