Foreword to the INDEPTH Resource Kit
The INDEPTH Secretariat developed in 2004 a Starter Kit for New Demographic Surveillance
Systems. The kit, which has been completely incorporated in this new Resource Kit, is based on experience in running long-term longitudinal DSS sites, and covers the following main sections: Standard Operating Procedures; Site Design Decisions; Recruitment & Training; Baseline Census Round; and Useful Resources. The Starter Kit is intended for use by all those settings that have decided to implement DSS from scratch, and have already secured their startup funding, but still need practical guidance in getting started.
After the publication and launch of the Starter Kit, its users have asked the Secretariat questions such as: “What’s next after establishment of the DSS site?” and “Is there another INDEPTH product that guides the running and maintenance of DSS sites after they are established?” These questions, as well as outcomes from our capacity building workshops for data managers, site leaders, and financial managers from established DSS sites, advised the development of the INDEPTH Resource Kit. This kit, therefore, contains experiences/best practices from well-established and new DSS sites on running and maintaining a DSS.
The INDEPTH Resource Kit includes a specific section on optional add-on modules, special
studies, or sample surveys that are additional to the core data set collected during routine update rounds of a DSS site. These include nested morbidity surveys, nested risk factor surveys, nested health system surveys, environmental monitoring, intervention trials, and controlled trials registries.
