The RBM Global Strategic Plan agreed to by the Youndé Declaration in 2005 aims that by the year
2010, 80% of children under 5 and 80% of pregnant women in malaria endemic countries will be
protected by ITNs. In view of this, ITNs have become a major intervention program across sub-
Saharan Africa. For example, it is projected that getting children under 5 years to sleep under ITNs
will prevent over half a million child deaths annually. However, with current low ITN coverage among
children in some countries, it is imperative to monitor the progression towards achieving the goals.
DSS sites could add periodically, one or two questions into an existing data collection tool in a
particular round on an annual, biannual basis to assess the coverage. These questions should be
taken from the standard and tested
Malaria Indicator Survey questions in order to allow
comparability over time and between place.
