We have the following items for your attention:

1. Prof. Sankoh attends TDR Board meeting

The INDEPTH Executive Director Prof Osman Sankoh represented INDEPTH Network as an observer at the Joint Coordinating Board (JCB) of the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR). The meeting was held at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, from the 22 to 24 June 2015.

TDR is a global programme of scientific collaboration that helps facilitate, support and influence efforts to combat diseases of poverty. TDR is hosted at the World Health Organization (WHO), and is sponsored by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and WHO

2. Education Working Group invited to SA workshop



Dr Mamusu Kamanda (right), from the INDEPTH Education Working Group,  in discussion with (L-R) Dr. Abdul Jalloh, Country Director Medical Research Centre in Sierra Leone; Dr.  Hassainatu Abdullah,  a Consultant,  CHaRT Sierra Leone and Dr. Johannes John-Langba, Senior Lecturer in Social Development,  University of Cape Town during a workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa. The INDEPTH education working group submitted a proposal entitled “Deconstructing the multilevel effects of stigma on the response to the Ebola Epidemic” (as part of INDEPTH collaboration with CHaRT Sierra Leone, UMEA, MRC Sierra Leone) on Ebola and education in Sierra Leone. The group got an invitation to attend a Partnership Strengthening workshop for the Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises programme in Johannesburg, from 23-25 June 2015 that is managed by Enhancing Learning and Research for Humanitarian Assistance.

3. Data Scientist positions in the MRC/Wits Agincourt Unit, South Africa

Please find attached an advertisement for Data Scientist positions in the MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit. These positions will provide a rich and stimulating working experience in a collegial environment that focuses on personal and professional growth.
The closing date is 6th July, 2015.

4. TDR International Postgraduate Scholarships

A.   Department of Public Health at the University of Zambia

The University of Zambia, School of Medicine (UNZA SOM), Department of Public Health in collaboration with TDR, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for a place in the following full-time postgraduate programmes, with a focus on Implementation Research, for the 2015 academic year, commencing September 2015.

E.  Call for TDR International Postgraduate Scholarship on Implementation Science for 2016 Academic Year

The University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Public Health announces a call for full-time Master and Doctoral Degree Programmes in the field of Implementation Science. The award for the programmes is provided by TDR, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases hosted at the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Application deadline for Masters Degree Programme: 15 August 2015
Application deadline for PhD Degree Programme: 31 August 2015
Application deadline for TDR scholarship: 15 September 2015

5. IJE Photo Essay Competition

 The International Journal of Epidemiology is holding a competition for the best photo essay on the theme: Health and Well-being

The best photo essays will be published in the Journal, and the prize for the winner will be £100 in book tokens
