1. Course on Epidemiological evaluation of vaccines: efficacy, safety and policy

Epidemiological research has become an important tool in assessing vaccine protection. Although there are several courses specialising in vaccinology, there remains a gap in teaching about advanced epidemiological tools for vaccine evaluation. This course fills that gap, providing an in-depth training on current methods used in the evaluation of vaccine efficiency, safety and policy. It aims to address immunisation issues in high, middle and low income countries.

The overall aim of the course is to provide an understanding of the methods used in the evaluation of vaccines and immunisation; from early human trials through to assessment of population impact and policy.

2. The Africa Research Excellence Fund Fellowship

The Africa Research Excellence Fund is pleased to give news of a new opportunity for outstanding early career African researchers.

The new programme of AREF Research Development Fellowship is designed to enable talented, African postdoctoral researchers to develop their own research ideas and funding proposals through placements of up to nine months in leading research organisations in South Africa, UK and continental Europe.

The maximum award is £43,000 GB Pounds for a nine-month Fellowship. The first deadline for receipt of applications is 8th July, 2015. The first awards will be announced in October/November 2015.

3. ADDRF 2015 call for applications

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), in partnership with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), is pleased to announce a call for applications for the 2015 ADDRF Fellowships for Doctoral Research on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Vaccine Trials in West Africa.

The ADDRF Fellowship Program seeks to facilitate more rigorous engagement of doctoral students in research, strengthen their research skills, and provide them an opportunity for timely completion of their doctoral training. The program targets doctoral students with strong commitment to a career in training and/or research. The overall goal of the ADDRF Program is to support the training and retention of highly-skilled, locally-trained scholars in research and academic positions across the region.

The ADDRF will award about seven fellowships in 2015 to doctoral students who are within two years of completing their thesis at an African university. Research themes for these awards are open to a range of disciplines, such as biomedical research, epidemiology, or social and behavioral sciences, as long as their focus remains HIV/AIDS prevention and vaccine trials.
