Registration of vital events such as births deaths and migration and other events like marriages in
most developing countries is woefully inadequate, even though there are established institutions
such as the births and deaths registry departments, the immigration service to deal with
international migration and the courts for marital registration. In the DSS sites, births, deaths and
marriage registration is near complete. To help the national registries, the DSS data can be linked
to the national data at the district level. Sites should educate and encourage members of their
community to register all vital events with the appropriate department. Sites could help in
facilitating the registration process. For example, in Navrongo and Kintampo, the DSS facilitates
the registration of births. This can be extended to other events where possible and the data should
be linked to that of the registry. The main problem of national registries is the lack of
computerization, but since they have unique identifier for each of their documents, DSS sites can
make use of such identifiers until registries are adequately resourced to deliver these essential
services.
