INDEPTH confirms Scientific Writing Workshop at AGM

The INDEPTH Secretariat has confirmed that there will be a Scientific Writing Workshop for INDEPTH scientists during the AGM 2016 in Kampala, Uganda, in November. One of INDEPTH’s long standing commitments is the training and strengthening of research capacities of the next generation of scientists from member centres in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) in order to increase scientific productivity of members and the Network in general.

In keeping with this commitment, INDEPTH regularly organises (where possible annually) a scientific writing workshop for carefully selected young scientists from various member HDSS. The 2016 INDEPTH Annual General Meeting (AGM 2016) will be held from 16-18 November 2016 in Kampala. This pre-AGM workshop is planned for INDEPTH young researchers who are actively working on draft manuscripts, seeking assistance from a professional journal editor, and interested in a working session. The maximum number of participants this year is 8.

INDEPTH Network Capacity Strengthening and Training Manager, Dr Martin Bangha, said the workshop aimed at "going beyond the basics of writing for publications in general medical journals and understand strategic ways to catch an editor’s attention." Other objectives, he said are "to consider the three things your manuscript submission must contain and the three things it should not, from the perspective of a general medical editor."

"Also to build on pre-work to refine and strengthen draft INDEPTH manuscripts, and finalise them for submission," he added.

Dr Bangha mentioned the Lead Facilitator of the workshop as Dr Jocalyn Clark, INDEPTH Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) Member and Executive Editor of The Lancet. She is formerly Assistant Editor, BMJ; Senior Editor, PLOS Medicine; and Executive Editor, JHPN and icddr,b. Other SAC members will also be available for facilitation.
