Position: Research Associate

Matt Coates is a Research Associate at Harvard Medical School working on The Lancet Commission on Reframing Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries for the Poorest Billion (NCDI Poverty). In this role, he conducts analyses on risk factors exposures, disease burden, and service availability with a focus on the poorest populations globally. Additionally, he provides support to NCDI Poverty groups/commissions in 11 countries that have formed alongside the Lancet commission. Prior to joining the Lancet commission, Matt worked for three years at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation on the Global Burden of Disease studies, in demography, estimating all-cause mortality and populations from censuses, vital registration and population surveys. In addition, he worked on the estimation of disease burden attributable to alcohol use as a risk factor, and on estimating under-5 mortality at the county level in China. He obtained his Masters in Public Health in Global Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington with a thesis on the underestimation of child mortality from birth histories due to the selection bias of non-orphaned children. Previously, Matt obtained a BA in Neurobiology from Harvard University.
